VC’s ‘surgery’ irks Indian medicine docs The Indian medicine fraternity has launched a fresh tirade against the vice-chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University — this time for attempting to remove the term ‘surgery’ from Ayush degree courses such as ‘Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery’ (BAMS) and Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS).
The Indian Siddha Medical Graduates Association has procured a letter from vice-chancellor Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan addressed to top health officials including Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, urging them to remove the term ‘surgery’ which is suffixed to all the degree courses.
In his letter, Dr Mayil Vahanan says, “The term “surgery” can be used only when the candidate is exposed to the training for performing surgeries on the patients. In reality, no surgery is involved in the Indian systems of medicine.”
In August last year, the state’s premier medical varsity invited trouble when a high-level committee decided to change the syllabus of Indian medicine courses by removing sections that taught modern medicine and surgery.
This move provoked protests by Siddha and Ayurveda students across the state and ended when Central Council of Indian Medicine warned the university that it had no authority to make such changes to the prescribed syllabus being followed in hundreds of colleges across India.
A case filed by Siddha doctors against the vice-chancellor has been pending in the Madurai high court since then.
Reiterating his stand on the issue, Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan says, “I wrote to all Siddha, Unani and Ayurvedia colleges in TN and asked for a list of surgeries they had performed over the past year.
There was no proper reply. I do not mean to offend anybody, but these are the facts. Practitioners of Indian medicine do not perform any surgeries and they do not have ‘ayurvedic’ anesthesia.”
“The term ‘surgery’ at the end of their degrees could be misleading. People’s lives could be in jeopardy,” says Dr Mayil Vahanan, who claims he raises these issues to protect patients.
Countering the VC, Siddha practitioners point out that MBBS graduates are also not allowed to perform surgery, but they still are called ‘Bachelors of Surgery’.
“Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine students learn all the basics of surgery too, they also have lessons in modern medicine to help them diagnose and refer patients who need immediate allopathic attention.
When I receive a patient with appendicitis, I would definitely refer him to an allopathic surgeon; and not perform the surgery myself,” says Dr Selvin Innocent Dhas, president of Indian Siddha Medical Graduates Association.
While Siddha doctors are confident that the surgeon-status would not be docked off their degrees just by the efforts of one VC, they contend that such issues would affect the confidence of students.

Cinnamon and Honey; Whoever thought?
Cinnamon and Honey; Whoever thought?
Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. What it will do is what some call 'turning to sugar'. In reality, honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will "crystallize". When this happens loosen the lid, boil some water and sit the honey container in the hot water, but turn off the heat and let it liquefy naturally. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. This will kill the enzymes in the honey.
Cinnamon and Honey
Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a 'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects for any kind of diseases.
Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Researched by western scientists:
HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply it on bread instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, when they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.
ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily (morning and night) one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain -- and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.
BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.
CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses.
UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from its root.
GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.
IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.
INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals
INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural 'Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.
LONGEVITY:
Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests
the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of
cinnamon powder, and three cups of boiling water to make a tea. Drink
1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and
arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start
performing the chores of a 20-year-old.RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.
PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.
SKIN INFECTIONS:Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin Infections.
WEIGHT LOSS:Daily in the morning one half hour before
breakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.
CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month.
FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.
BAD BREATH: People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.
HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

No bones about it !
Bone-setters have been included in NRHM to overcome acute lack of doctors in Nagaland
Faced with an acute shortage of medical doctors, the
Nagaland government is now encouraging traditional systems of medicine
to provide healthcare to its people. This is being done by including
traditional healthcare practitioners in the National Rural Health
Mission (NRHM) under the AYUSH (ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha and
homoeopathy) system.
While most systems of
alternative medicines are integrated in the NRHM, Nagaland government
has also included bone-setting under the system. Bone-setting is an art
that is passed on from generation to generation.
``We
have a strong system of traditional medicines and people accept these
systems very well,'' Dr Yangerlemla, Principal Director, Department of
Health and Family Welfare (Nagaland) said, adding that it was a
conscious decision to incorporate bone-setters in the health stream.
There
is a great demand for orthopaedics in Nagaland as falls and accidents
are common in this mountainous terrain. Traditional healers applying
locally made herbs and setting broken and dislocated bones within
minutes is a common sight. “Not all these cases may be successful in
treating patients but are, more or less, known to be very effective. So
we have decided to make the method more hygienic and acceptable by
training the traditional practitioners,” Dr Yangerlemla said.
Each
of the 11 districts in Nagaland has about 15-20 bone setters who will
be trained under the NRHM and integrated into the mainstream healthcare
system.
At present Nagaland has only 400-odd MBBS
doctors but requires 800 more such doctors. However, there is a blanket
ban on appointment of regular doctor since 1998. Appointments are made
only on contractual basis which does not attract doctors who prefer to
move out and serve in the neighbouring States or bigger cities.
There
is no medical college in Nagaland but it has 40 medical undergraduate
seats from the Central quota. It is mandatory for students to serve in
the State for five years after completion of the medical course if the
government can provide them regular employment. But, since the
government cannot provide them employment, these doctors prefer to move
out of the State. As far as the specialists are concerned, there are
only seven eye specialists and nine gynaecologists in the entire State.
Worse,
difficult terrain and lack of facilities does not attract professionals
to serve in the rural areas despite the State government paying Rs
60,000 per month to those willing to serve in the far-flung areas. Bad
roads, lack of telecommunication and interrupted power and water supply
makes functioning for the doctors impossible. There are also no vehicles
for doctors which makes them immobile.
Under the AYUSH system, there are seven doctors serving under the AYUSH and 29 have been appointed on contractual basis.
There
are 396 health sub-centres, 126 primary health centres and 21 community
health centres with very few private practitioners. The few private
practitioners available are in cities such as Kohima and Dimapur.

Ayurveda is a science of positive health
The use of plants as source of medicine dates back to about 4000 to 5000 B.C. The Indian and Chinese were the pioneers in using plants as valuable sources of medicine.
Ayurveda is a science of positive health and its origin is almost as old as human race. Ayurvedic system of medicine deals with maintainance of health, prolongation of healthy and qualitative lifeand prevention of diseases. The Ayurvedic system of medicine is the integral part of the Indian tradition in which plants and herbs are used not only tocure the diseases, but also to provide a source of minerals and vitamins whichgive proper health and nutrition to human being. Though, the sources ofmedicine are plant kingdom, animal kingdom and minerals and metals, yet plantsare easily available in nature and can be used according to needs.
India is one of the few developing countries which has initiated institutions like the Centre for Medicinal andAromatic Plants (CIMAP), the Regional Research Laboratories (RRL) at Jammu,Bhubaneshwar and Jorhat, the All India Co-ordinated Project on the Improvementof Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the ICAR, National Botanical Gardens,Forest Research Institutes, State Cinchona Directorates in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, and in addition, many Agricultural Universities have been working on the technological advancement of this group of crops. However, except for CIMAP and few other centres under ICAR who have taken over a few selected crops for improvement, the replenishment of renewable inputs like quality planting material of improved varieties, developing extension literature, organizingtraining and quality testing, are very limited. _ Drug plants had been extensively described by Aristotle, Theophrastus and others as early as 77 B.C. Dioscorides (64-1600 B.C.) in his famous book ‘De Materia Medica’ has given invaluable and authoritative references about drug yielding plants.
Folk medicine utilise 1600 species which are newly identified as drug yielding plants and are well known for their use in about 4000 drug industries of various Indian systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha (South Indian System) and Homeopathy, it is about 12% of present Indian flora. About 80% of the raw materials of medicinal plants are still now collected mainly from 75.17 million hectares of forest coverage.

Karnataka govt to introduce Ayush as mainstream treatment
Treatment based on Ayush (ayurveda, yoga, unani, siddha and homeopathy) may soon be available at taluk-level hospitals. With yoga and naturopathy emerging as preventive cure for lifestyle diseases and ailments, the state government plans to introduce Ayush as mainstream treatment in all taluk hospitals in phases.
This was revealed by chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda while speaking about Arogya Expo 2012 which opened in Bangalore on Thursday.
“Our government has recognised the importance of yoga in daily life and has given priority for the empowerment of this sector. The department of Ayush, in collaboration with the Shantivana Trust of Dharmasthala, has already opened outpatient units in 10 taluk-level hospitals in the state on public-private partnership model,” he said.
“These units are useful in extending natural health services to the public. We intend to extend this concept to all the districts of Karnataka in a phased manner,” he said.
To enhance the presence of these curing methods in the state, the government has also started a Yoga and Naturopathy College in Mysore.
“This institute is offering several useful courses. Yoga and naturopathy are a safe and effective combination of drugless therapy. They need to be promoted in the interest of the society,” he said.
The five-day expo is hosting over 150 stalls on naturopathy and Ayush. Thousands are swarming the show from all over the world. From water therapy to leach therapy, the expo has something for everyone.
While some visitors were just curious, many knew what they were here for.
“I’d heard of Om Seva Kendra and their methods of curing ailments. I was curious to know how they cure people of ailments as I suffer from body aches. I also wanted to enroll myself in their camps,” said Shashwati Rao, a homemaker.

Ashwin Raju, a student, said: “I’d read about Reiki cure for stress and positive energy. Here I experienced a new therapy with the Tamara Association which is bigger than Reiki and I wanted to try it. The association has positive energy activation and transfer. Although there is no immediate result when the therapists treat us, I believe in it and I hope to have results.”
More crowds were seen at leach therapy which also offered a few demonstrations.“If you have skin irritations, we put a small leach on the affected area which will suck the impure blood and the irritation is gone,” said a representative from leach therapy.
Most of the crowd, however, seemed to be interested in orthopaedic-related issues. From back aches to wrists, many had problems related to bones and muscles. “In today’s world, lifestyle diseases include mostly back aches and back-related problems. Hence, acupressure and massages are most sought after therapies,” said Veena Kumari, a naturopathy doctor.
Skin- and dermatology-related stalls were also crowded, mostly by women and girls.
“Today, girls use different types of cosmetics. But chemical-based cosmetics are known to be harmful to skin. Our traditional shikakai, amla and mehendi are equally good if some flavours are added to them. They cause no harm or side-effects to the skin or scalp. We’ve been using them from time immemorial,” said Seetha R, an ayurveda student from Belgaum.
